ASPEN

COLONY

Framed. Acrylic on canvas. Size: 36”” x 24”

Aspen trees can make your heart sing as the whisper of

rustling leaves quake in the wind. At the altitude depicted in this painting, the sky is always impressive and the snow sparkles as though embedded with diamonds. The Aspen tree is one of the most beautiful and remarkable living things on our planet. Most Aspens grow in large clonal colonies, derived from a single plant. If you walk in an Aspen grove surrounded by trees all belonging to the same root system, you are in the presence of one of the largest organisms on the planet. One such Aspen colony in Utah (nicknamed Pando) is male, is estimated to be 80,000 years old, and occupies 106 acres.
